1. While the majority of Americans 45+ have had recent cancer screenings, a notable portion, led by men, have never had one.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a year that the American Cancer Society expects cancer diagnoses to cross 2 million. New CivicScience data among U.S. adults 45 and older find nearly 6-in-10 say they have received a mammogram, prostate exam, or other cancer screening in the past two years. Women are much more likely to have had a recent cancer screening.
On the other hand, 1-in-5 say they have never had a cancer screening, including more than 3-in-10 men aged 45+ (compared to 11% of women 45+ who say the same).
2. Gift cards look to be in demand this year as Americans increasingly prefer receiving them as a holiday gift.
Gift cards are an evergreen holiday present (pun intended), and this year they could be more popular than ever. According to new CivicScience data, two-thirds of holiday shoppers are likely to purchase a gift card this season, primarily for their convenience or secondarily because the recipient is hard to shop for.
But it’s not just convenience that is likely to drive gift card demand this year. The percentage of adults who say they’d prefer to receive a gift card this year is up three percentage points from last year and six points from 2022. Those who want gift cards also outpace those who want physical gifts like clothing, electronics, or experiences.

3. Over one-third of Americans in the workforce are looking for seasonal holiday jobs this year.
Amazon recently announced plans to hire 250K new employees to keep up with demand over the busy holiday season. Among U.S. adults who are employed or looking for work, more than a third say they are at least ‘somewhat’ likely to apply for a seasonal job over the holidays this year. Americans in lower-income households are the most likely to say they’ll be looking for seasonal employment for the holidays, including more than 50% of those earning under $25K.
