The Golden Globes are back on Tuesday night – and a little different this year. For one, it’ll be the rare major award show to occur on a weeknight – you can thank the NFL’s playoff schedule for that – and the first to air simultaneously on NBC and Peacock. It also comes after a tumultuous couple of years for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the body which puts on the show. After numerous reports of alleged conflicts of interest, bribery, and public criticism of its lacking diversity among the voting body, the Golden Globes were held but not televised in 2022, leaving an uncertain future.
According to the latest data from CivicScience, the Globes will likely be a quieter outing this year, continuing the ratings skid for awards shows more generally. Just 4% of U.S. adults polled claimed they will ‘definitely’ watch the 2023 Golden Globes, with another 11% saying they will ‘probably’ tune in. However, 7% of adults aged 18-to-34 claim they’ll ‘definitely’ watch the awards – and Gen Z adults nearly double the Gen Pop’s likelihood to watch (28% compared to 15%). Peacock users also outpace the Gen Pop’s interest, with 9% ‘definitely’ tuning in and another 21% ‘probably’ watching.
Among those familiar with the assorted Golden Globes controversies, they certainly haven’t helped. Just 7% in this camp consider themselves ‘more likely’ to tune in this year – with a whopping 42% claiming they’re less likely to watch. Right over half of all U.S. adults familiar with the HFPA’s reputational issues are just as likely as before. Gen Z adults significantly outpace all other age groups in their heightened interest in the Globes under this context – 21% are more likely to watch.
