1. Disney and Costco join the list of companies moving to combat the sharing of accounts and memberships.

This month, Disney+ and Costco are following in Netflix’s footsteps by cracking down on account sharing in an effort to reduce account sharing. CivicScience data suggests this could benefit both companies, as Disney+ currently leads compared to other streaming platforms in account sharing, with 26% of its users accessing content without paying. Additionally, 20% of Costco account holders report using someone else’s membership.

2. Reddit’s popularity is surging after its IPO, and its content appears to have an impact on purchasing decisions. 

The social media platform Reddit has been on a rapid ascent in site traffic with its recent IPO in March and likely in part due to a boost in visibility through Google search results. CivicScience’s latest data shows a substantial increase in the number of U.S. adults visiting the platform, climbing from 38% in 2021 to 50% in 2024.

This growth could make for a promising development for advertisers and publishers. Reddit has become a growing source of referral traffic, and the platform’s users are proving to be receptive to advertising and other user recommendations. Additional data show 25% percent of Reddit users say they are likely to purchase items they see advertised on Reddit, and 45% report that their buying decisions are shaped by the community’s comments and advice. 1

3. Two-thirds of Americans enjoy shopping at farmers’ markets, driven by a desire to support local and enjoy quality produce.

According to new CivicScience data, about 2-in-3 U.S. adults enjoy going to farmers’ markets, while 11% have been to one before but didn’t like it.2 Consumers in middle-income ($50K to $100K) and higher-income ($100K+) households are much more likely to have shopped at a farmers’ market before, and more likely to say they enjoy shopping at them.

Americans who frequent farmers’ markets cite supporting local farmers and gardeners, purchasing better-tasting produce, and seeking healthier food options as their primary motivations for doing so. Conversely, those who don’t shop at farmers’ markets point to the inconvenience compared to grocery stores, a lack of nearby markets, and limited or inconvenient operating hours as their primary deterrents.
