CivicScience continually tracks current and anticipated consumer trends. Here are three key insights marketers should know this week. All insights are derived from the CivicScience Social | Political | Economic | Cultural (SPEC) Report, a weekly report available to clients covering the latest news and insights. Start here to learn more.

1. About 1 in 5 Americans are interested in Apple’s New Vision Pro.

Apple released their new virtual reality headset, the Vision Pro, earlier this month. While it’s still new and in its early adopter phase, CivicScience’s ongoing tracking shows that ownership and interest in virtual reality headsets have more than doubled over the last eight years. That said, 21% of U.S. adults are currently ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ interested in Apple’s Vision Pro – a four percentage point increase (or 23% jump) since the VR headset was announced in June.

2. Americans are giving up sweets and gossiping for Lent.

The season of Lent officially started last week, and 42% of Americans are embracing sacrifices this year. Among those participating, a quarter are giving up sweets/desserts and gossiping/complaining, followed by 21% abstaining from alcohol (perhaps as a Dry January extension) and fast-food/dining out.

Zyn nicotine pouches have grown in popularity over the past few months, boosted in part by a wave of “Zynfluencers” on social media. While they have ignited a conversation about their own potential health risks, they provide users with a smoke-free and tobacco-free alternative to cigarettes and vapes. Fifteen percent of U.S. adults 21+ have used or intend to use Zyn pouches. This increases to more than 40% among cigarette smokers and cannabis users.
